Guide To : Making your clothes last longer
It’s no secret when it comes to making your wardrobe and overall lifestyle more sustainable, that making your clothing last longer is an easy habit to adopt.
Did you know that wearing clothing 50 times instead of 5 (the fast fashion average) reduces carbon emissions by 400% per item, per year. With fashion being the second biggest polluter in the world it’s vital that as consumers, we do as much as we can to minimize the effects our shopping habits have on the environment.
We’ve all had items of clothing that we’ve carelessly thrown into the washing machine, only to later see it’s ruined because we didn’t consider the correct way to wash them. By not taking the proper care of our clothing, we end up throwing it away, only for it to end up in a landfill. This is detrimental to our environment considering the pollution already caused from getting products produced, shipping and maintained. Not to mention the money wasted purchasing the clothing. Due to this we thought we’d share some tips which we find help when extending the lifespan of your much loved clothing.
PROTECT YOUR CLOTHING
Stains can be a death sentence for clothing, so always take precautions when doing certain activities like cooking or gardening. It’s also good to protect clothing in garment bags when storing them in your closet to help preserve them.
FOLLOW WASHING INSTRUCTIONS
Clothing doesn’t come with wash care instructions for nothing. It’s important to follow these when washing your garments to ensure that your much loved clothings lifespan is a long one.
LEARN TO REPAIR YOUR CLOTHES
95% of disregarded clothing can be repaired or upcycled. A little sewing knowledge can take you far when it comes to making your clothes last longer, knowing that a small tear or loose button doesn’t mean you have to throw away your items. Learning to fix your clothes when these things happen means that you can love them for that much longer.
Now we know with our Foofy Loungewear it’s hard to not repeatedly wear them daily as they are so comfy. However, be conscious when wearing them as the key is to wash them as little as you can. Most of your clothes can last longer than a few wears before needing to be washed. According to the CEO of Levi’s you should actually never wash your jeans at all!
Why not try air drying your clothes or hanging them outside, (when the weather permits), we can guarantee nothing beats the smell of clothing dried outdoors. You’d also feel better knowing you've used less energy doing this, again doing your bit for the environment by adopting small habits.
